{"id":54,"date":"2006-08-31T11:43:00","date_gmt":"2006-08-31T18:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.afterhell.com\/news\/?p=54"},"modified":"2006-08-31T11:43:00","modified_gmt":"2006-08-31T18:43:00","slug":"august-ends-darkly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.afterhell.com\/news\/?p=54","title":{"rendered":"August ends darkly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I felt compelled to put work on hold long enough to blog a few things.<\/p>\n<p>One of the less pleasant aspects of adulthood is experiencing the pain of watching our elders pass on, like Frodo and Samwise witnessing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theargonath.cc\/pictures\/fotr\/passing.html\">Passing of the Elves<\/a>.&nbsp; And when it&#8217;s someone we don&#8217;t really know, only revered or worshipped, that emotional distance provides the luxury of being possessive.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimhensonlegacy.org\/\">Jim Henson<\/a> died, for example, I was talking with some fellow fans who talked about him as if he were a close friend.&nbsp; But they&#8217;d never spoken to him, never written to him.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, Jim meant so much to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wait,&#8221; I&#8217;d often say.&nbsp; &#8220;Did you know him?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, but I feel so close to him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This happened a lot.&nbsp; The chills got colder each time.<\/p>\n<p>I bring all that up to acknowledge that certain degree of presumption, delineating for future reference the distinction between claiming an idol for yourself and paying one&#8217;s respects.&nbsp; I want to do the latter, you see.<\/p>\n<p>First, the less obvious.&nbsp; Actor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/heraldsun\/story\/0,21985,20313552-5006023,00.html\">Glenn Ford<\/a> died yesterday, remembered by family, friends, and hundreds of characters that he gently made his own.&nbsp; He made a few cinematic forays into urban dread in things like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0047885\/\"><u>The Blackboard Jungle<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp; And thanks to his performance as Clark Kent&#8217;s dad in the 1978 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0078346\/\">Superman<\/a>, I can&#8217;t help but feel his passing.<\/p>\n<p>On August 25, screenwriter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/printedition\/california\/la-me-stefano31aug31,1,6375744.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california\">Joseph Stefano<\/a> also died.&nbsp; He&#8217;s going to be most likely remembered for scaring oodles of people in two really cool ways.&nbsp; He wrote the screenplay that Alfred Hitchcock used to make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabula-rasa.info\/DarkAges\/RobertBloch.html\">Robert Bloch<\/a>&#8216;s novel <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psycho\">Psycho<\/a> into a silver screen masterwork.&nbsp; It was Stefano&#8217;s idea to follow Marion Crane from her day job to her nighttime stopover at the Bates Motel, only to make a fatal appointment with Mrs Bates in the shower.&nbsp; God, I remember the first time I saw that scene.&nbsp; I was ten.&nbsp; I was frozen in place.&nbsp; And I wanted to run.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Stefano was also a co-creator and major contributor to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theouterlimits.com\/episodes\/index.html?syndication\">The Outer Limits,&#8221;<\/a> the original TV series in 1963.&nbsp; My understanding of the behind-the-scenes business is vague, but I gather that he gradually became frustrated with the direction of the series, especially in its second year which is when he left it.&nbsp; But in his wake, the original show had a uniquely dark, almost Gothic take on science fiction.&nbsp; Among my favorite episodes is one of his stories, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theouterlimits.com\/episodes\/index.html?syndication\">&#8220;Nightmare.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I stake no claims and make no demands, save one &#8212; that they are worth remembering.&nbsp; It&#8217;s sad to see them go, but they left us with some cool memories.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theweaponshop.com\/outerlimits\/OLC2a.html\"><em><strong>We now return control of your computer monitor back to you&#8230;.<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I felt compelled to put work on hold long enough to blog a few things.
