Jamie decided to get a totally unnecessary and much appreciated gift for yours truly — the new U2 album<\/a>.
\nIt’s screaming with a new energy and yet a recognizable passion familiar to U2 nuts like me.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ve been a fan of theirs since I saw concert footage of them on MTV back in January 1981.\u00c2\u00a0 Yeah, it was that memorable.\u00c2\u00a0 Seeing Bono on stage was a shock.\u00c2\u00a0 I got the same emotional response, amazement and awe, that I got when I first saw the Beatles.\u00c2\u00a0 He was like a mix of Patti Smith<\/a> and John Lennon.<\/p>\n

Here’s the beauty of what they do and Bono’s writing in particular.\u00c2\u00a0 Their new single, “Vertigo,” is obviously about a certain kind of confusion.\u00c2\u00a0 But the context, the cause, is left open to interpretation.<\/p>\n

Hello hello (hola!)
\nI’m at a place called Vertigo (sorpresa!)
\nIt’s everything I wish I didn’t know
\nExcept you
\ngive me something
\nI can feel
\nFEEL<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Is it about personal change?\u00c2\u00a0 A whirlwind romance?\u00c2\u00a0 Political upheaval?\u00c2\u00a0 Spiritual crisis?<\/p>\n

Or how about a chorus from another song,\u00c2\u00a0 full of poignancy and self-recrimination:<\/p>\n

And it’s you when I look in the mirror
\nAnd it’s you when I don’t pick up the phone
\nSometimes you can’t make it on your own<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All I know for certain is that the emotions are genuine, the music is honest, and that the boys are at the top of their game.<\/p>\n
